HUMAN SERVICES

BECOME A TEACHER OR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATOR

Do you love children? Do you want to understand the critical nature of a child’s first year, or become a second-grade teacher, a speech-language pathologist, an occupational or physical therapist, a school-based clinician, or an administrator? If so, our Early Childhood Education / Education as a Profession Program could be the right fit for you!

You'll learn how children develop and grow over time, how to keep our young people safe and healthy, how to teach, what to teach, how to work in partnership with families, and how to be a professional in the fields of both early childhood and general education.

This flexible, two-year program allows students to explore pathways in early childhood education (ECE), teaching, and related fields such as counseling and child care management. Experiences in classrooms and ECE centers allow students to apply their learning in real-world settings while earning industry-recognized credentials (IRCs) and dual-enrollment opportunities through Vermont State University (VTSU) and the Community College of Vermont (CCV).

Two Pathways to Choose From:

Fundamentals of Early Childhood Education (ECE): Students gain a comprehensive understanding of ECE settings and roles, including child development, curriculum planning, family engagement, professionalism, and safety. They apply their skills in high-quality ECE centers and schools, preparing for roles such as teachers, child center directors, specialized service providers, and family support professionals.

Education as a Profession: Focused on researched-based practices and exploring education as a career path, students develop the skills, knowledge, and professional mindset needed for impactful careers. This course introduces instructional design, classroom culture, anti-bias approaches, and tools for working with students and families. Clinical experiences help students refine their observation and assistance skills in classroom environments, building the foundation for a professional teaching career.

  • Take one or two years of either course or a single year of each for program flexibility.

  • Gain hands-on clinical experience to build confidence and practical skills.

  • Earn industry-recognized credentials (IRCs) and take multiple dual-enrollment classes over two years.

  • Work with children, families, and educators to explore career paths and create lasting impact.

Whether you’re planning to pursue a career as a teacher, early childhood educator, therapist, or social services professional, this program equips you with the tools and experience to succeed.
