PATRICIA A. HANNAFORD CAREER CENTER
MECHANICAL SCIENCE
DISCOVER, FIX, AND BUILD
Do you love taking things apart to see how they work? Are you ready to get hands-on experience in welding, home maintenance, construction, and vehicle repair? Our Mechanical Science program offers a year-long, alternating-days course designed to introduce students to essential mechanical skills with pathways to further study in Automotive, Diesel, Industrial Design & Fabrication, Construction, or Welding.
This comprehensive program covers a variety of mechanical topics through engaging, practical exercises. Students gain an industry certification in safe tractor and equipment operation through the UVM Extension Tractor Safety program. They explore residential mechanical systems, learning to wire electrical circuits and plumb with copper, PEX, and PVC. The course also delves into agricultural maintenance, covering DC electrical systems, small engine principles, and preventative maintenance for power equipment. By applying their skills to small engines, students develop a deeper understanding of systems like fuel, ignition, and compression.

Fabrication introduces students to plasma cutting, both manual and CNC, as well as stick welding (SMAW) and wire-feed welding (MIG), building foundational skills for advanced metalworking. Residential construction emphasizes the tools, measurements, and basic trade skills required for building and home projects. The course culminates with the opportunity to compete in the FFA Mechanical Career Development Event, where students can showcase their expertise.
Whether your goal is further technical education or a head start in the trades, Mechanical Science prepares you for success in a range of exciting fields.
